Sustainability metrics of the PreZero Group
PreZero CR Hub Menschen legen Hände übereinander

Making impact measurable

Our data shows how we manage material flows, secure resources, generate energy, and reduce emissions. This makes our contribution to the circular economy visible and measurable.

Our non-financial metrics show the role we play as a partner for circular operations: securing strategic raw materials, supporting stable value chains, and reducing emissions.

PreZero Polymers also operates additional sites and facilities in Austria, Italy, and Belgium. The metrics collected there are included in the overall PreZero reporting.

Our strategic goal — and how we support it through sustainable action

Our goal is to become the preferred partner in the circular economy by 2030. To get there, we create sustainable solutions with added value across four focus areas and, as part of the Schwarz Group, contribute to the SBTi-validated net-zero target for 2050.

We focus our efforts across these areas:

Note on the assurance of selected non-financial metrics:
Metrics marked with an asterisk (*) were subject to limited assurance for the 2024 financial year as part of the external audit of the PreZero Group.

For the 2025 financial year, there will be no separate assurance for PreZero. The metrics shown are included in the audit of the Schwarz Group companies. A separate review for PreZero is planned again from 2026 onward.

Further information on the assured metrics can be found in the external assurance report.

Zero Waste

Making material flows visible and manageable

Zero Waste starts with transparency.

We capture waste volumes, analyze material flows, and identify suitable recovery routes. This creates the basis for returning valuable materials to the cycle and reducing avoidable waste.

Only what is measurable can be managed.

Resource security

Making secondary raw materials available

Resource security means keeping materials in circulation and making them available for industrial use as high-quality secondary raw materials.

This strengthens resource sovereignty in Europe and reduces dependence on primary raw materials that often need to be sourced through volatile markets and supply chains.

Through the circular economy, we create industrial resilience that helps companies become less dependent on global supply chains.

Materials

26.824.699 t* total annual volume of valuable materials treated in internal and external facilities.

Sorting

7.997.284 t*  materials sorted per year.

Precise separation of material streams is essential for high-quality processing and a core part of our quality promise.

Recycling

7.692.832 t* materials recycled per year.

Share of recycled material flows (excluding organic waste):**

** The specified percentages refer exclusively to dry processing methods within the scope of material recovery. Organic waste streams are excluded from this metric, as they do not undergo material recycling in the conventional sense but are instead recovered through composting or anaerobic digestion. Consequently, the values do not necessarily total 100%, as the overview incorporates only selected categories.

Where material recovery reaches its limit, energy recovery follows as the final option in the cycle. This contributes to energy sovereignty in Europe.

927.341 MWh* renewable energy

By using non-recyclable waste for energy recovery, electricity and process steam can be generated. This helps replace primary energy sources such as coal and gas. Since around 50% of the waste used is of biogenic origin, the corresponding share of the energy generated is considered renewable.

Data & Compliance

Systems for transparency

Regulatory requirements are increasing — especially around recyclability, recycled content, and emissions reporting. Sustainability data is becoming business-relevant data that allows resource risks to be assessed more precisely.

Our systems capture and structure material flows and CO₂e data, creating the basis for reporting, audits, and informed decisions.

These sustainability metrics are brought together in ESG reporting and made accessible for greater transparency and more targeted management.

Building on this, we support companies with solutions such as WasteEcoSavings, Packaging Consulting, and Zero Waste strategies to manage data and measures in a structured way.

Decarbonization

Reducing emissions systematically

Decarbonization is an integral part of our business model.

We support companies in reducing emissions in a targeted way — through functioning circular systems, higher recovery rates, efficient processes, and transparent CO₂e data.

This creates a reliable basis for management, reporting, and informed decisions.

Climate target & SBTi

Net-zero target by 2050

As a global retail group, the Schwarz Group companies have a responsibility to contribute actively to climate action. That is why they have jointly committed to an SBTi-validated net-zero target by 2050.

  • Scope 1 & 2: By 2050, operational emissions are to be reduced by 90 percent compared with the 2019 base year.
  • Scope 3: By 2050, indirect FLAG emissions are to be reduced by 72 percent, while indirect emissions from energy and industrial processes (E&I) and emissions from sold fuels are to be reduced by 90 percent compared with the 2022 base year.

These targets have been reviewed and validated by the SBTi.

  • Scope 1 & 2: By 2030, operational emissions are to be reduced by 48 percent compared with the 2019 base year.
  • Scope 3: By 2034, indirect FLAG emissions are to be reduced by 42.4 percent, indirect emissions from energy and industrial processes (E&I) by 35 percent, and emissions from sold fuels by 58.8 percent compared with the 2022 base year.

These targets have been reviewed and validated by the SBTi.

PreZero climate strategy

PreZero starts from a different position than the other Schwarz Group companies. As a circular economy company, we operate energy-intensive facilities and logistics processes. This means some CO₂e emissions are technically unavoidable because they result directly from necessary waste treatment.

Our contribution to the Schwarz Group companies' net-zero target:

We work continuously to reduce these emissions while managing growth so that additional emissions are kept to a minimum. Specifically, we aim to limit the increase in our own Scope 1 and 2 emissions to no more than +20.5 percent compared with 2019.

PreZero Carbon Footprint

Our emissions footprint is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and covers Scope 1, 2, and 3.

Compared with the 2023 financial year, total CO₂e emissions were reduced by −23.4 %.

This reduction is the result of targeted measures and improved data transparency.

Avoided Emissions

Climate contribution through circular systems

Avoided emissions arise where circular solutions replace energy-intensive primary production. This happens when recycled materials substitute primary raw materials or when energy is generated from organic waste instead of fossil energy sources.

We are developing a methodology to quantify these contributions in a transparent and traceable way.

Logistics

More than 12.000 vehicles includes the PreZero Group fleet.

15,2 %

of passenger cars and commercial vehicles under 3.5 t use alternative drive systems.

786

electric and hydrogen vehicles in the total fleet.

The gradual expansion of alternative drive systems supports the reduction of operational emissions.

Employees

Our operational strength

Circularity at industrial scale depends on qualified employees and stable processes.

Our approx. 30.000 employees across Europe work every day to make sure raw materials are not lost as waste, but returned to the material cycle.

Every one of them is a #PreZeroHero to us.

General notes on the external audit

Emission factors are based on sources including international organizations such as the IEA and IPCC, LCA databases such as ecoinvent, national institutions such as DBEIS/DEFRA, and industry associations such as Plastics Europe. To maintain comparability with previous years, the most recent emission factors available are not always used in every case.

Where data was not available at the time of reporting, previous-year data was used as the basis.
