PreZero SPOT

Packaging optimization and PPWR compliance in one digital platform

PreZero SPOT is a digital platform for analyzing and documenting data on packaging. From Design for Recycling and carbon footprint assessments to preparing declarations of conformity, SPOT helps you stay compliant with the PPWR – from the initial packaging assessment to the finished technical documentation.

Central database for effective packaging management

In many businesses, packaging specifications are often scattered across Excel files, emails, and separate documents. That makes it harder to meet the requirements of the PPWR with the level of completeness, consistency, and traceability the regulation calls for. It also leaves more room for manual errors.

With PreZero SPOT in cooperation with Packaging Cockpit, you can collect and organize packaging specifications in one central system. This enables your suppliers to securely upload relevant data directly to the platform.

This turns individual, fragmented pieces of information into consistent technical documentation and a database ready to be audited — and your declaration of conformity along with it.

All packaging KPIs in one system

The EU Packaging Regulation and national EPR systems require reliable data, clear records, and documentation you can trace. At the same time, the marketability and cost of packaging increasingly determined by measurable environmental and compliance KPIs.

PreZero SPOT, our Sustainable Packaging Optimization Tool, calculates these KPIs using your packaging data and delivers them in a structured format for analysis, reporting, and documentation.

Recyclability

Assess the recyclability of your packaging across different countries and evaluate its Design for Recycling. SPOT factors in country-specific collection and recovery systems, such as the German Minimum Standard and future European CEN requirements.

Life cycle assessment (LCA)

Accurately measure the environmental impact of your packaging. PreZero SPOT provides reliable data on carbon footprint and other impact categories relevant to your reporting and packaging optimization.

Technical documentation (DoC)

Automatically generate the declaration of conformity required under the PPWR. Using your packaging data, PreZero SPOT creates audit-ready documentation for authorities, retail partners, and internal use.

Taxes and fees

Review costs related to international taxes on plastic, EPR licensing fees, and future ecomodulation surcharges.

How PreZero SPOT works

Our interactive demo gives you an overview of the platform’s main steps. It shows how item data is captured, how packaging is analyzed, and how key KPIs for recyclability, life cycle assessment, and compliance are calculated.

In the SPOTlight: The methodology behind the software

A software solution is only as reliable as the methodology it is built on. In this interview, Ernst Krottendorfer, Co-Founder of Packaging Cockpit, explains how SPOT turns legal requirements and scientific methods of assessment into a digital analysis.

Learn how digital data on packaging creates transparency around material composition and how that insight can lead to practical Design for Recycling improvements.

Not ready to manage everything digitally yet?

Software only works with structured and complete data. If you do not yet have a clear overview of your packaging specifications, or if your portfolio first needs to be aligned with PPWR requirements (Classes A–C), we can help you get started.

Our packaging consulting team helps break down data silos and define a strategic roadmap for your Design for Recycling.

FAQ: PreZero SPOT in cooperation with Packaging Cockpit

The basic functions are free, plus, you receive 50 credits for your first calculations of recyclability. You can get started by testing PreZero SPOT with your own data.

If you would like to use the tool for your entire portfolio, you can add more credits to access extended features such as life cycle assessments. You only pay for what you use.

Yes, the platform is hosted exclusively on servers in Germany and Austria in full compliance with European data protection standards (GDPR).

Our partner Packaging Cockpit GmbH operates the platform independently from both a technical and legal perspective. The system is strictly separated, which means that neither PreZero nor any other company within the Schwarz Group can access your specifications or results — technically or otherwise.

SPOT supports the transition from today’s national approaches to assessment to future European standards. The tool is already fully aligned with the upcoming PPWR.

Its assessment is based on the scientific methodology of FH Campus Wien (Circular Analytics). The methodology draws on established frameworks such as the Circular Packaging Design Guideline and national criteria, including the German Minimum Standard for packaging recyclability.

From mid-2026, the upcoming European Design for Recycling requirements from CEN, based on the JRC methodology, will be integrated into the tool. This gives you the option to assess packaging against recognized scientific criteria today while preparing your portfolio early for common EU standards.

Yes, SPOT can be linked directly to ERP or PLM systems such as SAP through APIs. This allows a two-way data flow: master data is transferred into SPOT, while calculated KPIs and compliance data are sent back into your own system.

For a quick start or smaller portfolios, an Excel upload is also available.

To fill data gaps across the supply chain, you can invite suppliers to enter packaging specifications themselves (using a black-box setup) through a secure supplier portal.

PreZero SPOT performs automated, simplified Life Cycle Assessments (LCA). The calculations are based on the international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 and use data sets from the ecoinvent database.

The methodological approach is designed for operational use and has been validated by Fraunhofer UMSICHT.

Depending on the application, different system limits can be taken into account - such as cradle-to-gate (from raw material extraction to production) or cradle-to-grave (over the entire life cycle).

In this way, environmental impacts such as the CO₂ footprint can be calculated for complete packaging portfolios and design variants can be objectively compared.
